Prevent Black Soot From Your Candles In 2 Easy Ways

Are you always frustrated with the presence of black smoke when burning your favourite scented candle or black soot clouding the rim on the glass of your candle?

Now, you can say GOODBYE to dancing flames and black soot, and HELLO to a clean and perfect burn in 2 simple steps!

1. TRIM YOUR WICK

This is the rule of thumb for all candle users. Every article you probably have read about candle care would have listed this as one of the most important points. Love your candle, trim it’s wick.

Soot will always form when you burn your scented candle as it is a product of incomplete combustion. It has nothing to do with the type of wax (soy, paraffin, vegetable, beewax, or others).  But you can always keep your soot level to the minimum by always trimming your wick to 3mm (or 1/8 inch) before each burn.

By keeping the wick trimmed to 3mm at all times, it helps to control the amount of “fuel” on the wick. Hence, by keeping the amount of “fuel” limited to 3mm, the flame will create a complete combustion where carbon particles are absorbed by the flame. This means less soot is formed while the candle is burning.

To trim your wick, you can choose to use a pair of scissors. However, it may prove to be challenging after you have used up half of your candle.

What we strongly recommend is that you use a wick trimmer, which is specially designed to trim wicks. Here’s a video demonstrating how easy and effortless it is to trim your wick before each burn!

2. USE AN ILLUMA LID

Having an Illuma-Lid on your jar candles not only makes it pretty and adds to the aesthetics of the room, it also steadies the flame, and prevents the flame from dancing. No dancing flame means equal heat distribution in the jar which will lead to a clean (no soot and black smoke) and even (no tunneling and wastage at the side of the candles) burn. Having a clean and even burn also enhances the fragrance distribution and extends the lifespan of the candle! Win-win for all <3

Now, go and apply these two steps as part of your candles burning rituals. Leave us a comment if you have other tips on how to prevent soot and have a clean and even burn! We would love to know 🙂
